Overcoming Times of Adversity in the Hospitality Industry

As we maneuver through this challenging time, we can choose to ignore all that is going on around us or we can turn this setback into an opportunity. As for myself and the team I lead, we know we will rise again and are preparing ourselves for the ‘new’ future.

In May of 1989, Bart Berkey posted the message I am featuring below. He has since updated it as it applies to the thought process we need to embrace today. Bart is the Author, Founder / CEO of Most People Don’t, LLC, a Motivational Storytelling and Sales Training Company designed to encourage individuals to “do” what “most people don’t.”

“You Can Do Anything For a Year”

Maybe solid wisdom from a newly graduated Penn State student that received a great job offer to join the hospitality industry, who didn’t receive his first choice for “geographic preference”? I grew up in Pittsburgh and was ready to experience a new destination. I looked at the positives and decided that my career would hopefully be exceptionally long, and I would have plenty of time to experience other areas. It proved to be an amazing experience with incredible employees and friends! One year quickly turned into three years and fate allowed me to get promoted to DC where I met my wife of 22 years!

Fast forward to 2008, when my position as Ritz-Carlton’s Sales & Marketing recruiter was eliminated during the financial crisis. A dear friend again shared, “You Can Do Anything for a Year”, meaning that I should accept the best job opportunity for my family. Things worked out for the best. Now in 2020, I am replaying my own advice and post this to help others…

“FACE this challenge and this obstacle. By doing what “Most People Don’t” during times of adversity, you can overcome and conquer.

  1. Show Flexibility
  2. Have Acceptance
  3. Remain Calm and Creative
  4. Display Empathy

Be patient, things will work out, and you can adjust your life until this passes. This is temporary. Happy to talk with anyone to help you… Most People Don’t, But You Do!

During these recent times, I have been using Bart to provide education and motivation to my ConferenceDirect team as we navigate the pandemic and economic crisis for ourselves and our clients. He has motivated our team, and some of our clients have engaged with him for speaking engagements at their upcoming virtual events.

The acronym he shared, enabling us to FACE this challenge, has helped us create and maintain our ‘anything for a year’ mentality.

I hope you enjoyed Bart’s post.
