A friend of mine shared a conversation he had with one of his younger colleagues discussing how to achieve success while riding the rollercoaster of your career. He explained the clickety clack noise she hears is her making the big climb up the first steep hill as she begins her exciting career path. She will certainly face other hills, twists, and turns along her journey, but all will be opportunities to learn and grow if they are embraced. His advice can be applied to your own hospitality industry career.
He shared with her five lessons that he has learned from over 30 years in the hospitality industry.
- Learn from others around you – each day you will interact with good bosses, challenging bosses, good co-workers, and challenging co-workers. These lessons will help shape your career path.
- Stay in touch with everyone – relationships and connections are important to your future success. Build your circle of influence and stay connected with these individuals.
- Develop mentors – reach out to people you can rely on for honest advice and will hold you accountable.
- Seek out opportunities to gain experience and grow – you must always find ways to improve. Find training and continuing education opportunities in your field of expertise.
- Be willing to take chances – those who advance further and faster are those willing to try new things.
Finally, he shared with her why he comes in every day with his hands in the air and a smile on his face. You see, while she is enjoying the exhilaration of the upward climb, he is enjoying the emotional high of racing through the curves and sailing down as he approaches his final turn.
We need team members at all the stages of the rollercoaster ride when building a successful business. We need innovative ideas and fresh approaches combined with knowledge and experience to ensure we build and maintain a successful business.
Where are you on your rollercoaster ride? Are you practicing the five tips above? If you do, you will soon have your hands in the air and a big smile as you enjoy both the climb and the entire ride.
I wish you continued success in all that you do.
