Guidance for Transitioning From Employee to Entrepreneur

After going through a challenging year and leading teams where some individuals had to temporarily expand into other industries to survive, I have learned how great it is to be an entrepreneur / independent business owner in the hospitality industry.

During this pause, I focused on improving my leadership, sales, and industry skills. One quote from my studies shared an interesting perspective from Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize winner and microfinance pioneer: All human beings are entrepreneurs. When we were in caves, we were all self-employed…finding our food, feeding ourselves. That’s where human history began. As civilization came, we suppressed it. We became ‘labor’ because they stamped us, ‘you are labor.’ We forgot that we are entrepreneurs.

What is the definition of an entrepreneur?

An entrepreneur is an individual who creates a new business, bearing most of the risks and enjoying most of the rewards. Entrepreneurs play a key role in any economy, using the skills and initiative necessary to anticipate needs and bringing good new ideas to market.

For me, this quote provides an even simpler definition:

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t”. Anonymous

Would you like to work smarter and not harder? Would you like to spend more time with family and friends?
